June 2017 Cover - Country Roads Magazine

June 2017 Cover - Country Roads Magazine

This concept for the Country Roads Magazine June cover was a departure from the typical formula. I had taken a photo of New Orleans based recording artist Tank of Tank & the Bangas. I thought that the image was strong & captured the essence of Tank. I also thought that the image was well-composed for the cover space. However, I wanted to do something other than directly reproducing my photograph for the cover. I leaned on an incredible illustrator named Lola Beltran to recreate the photo in her style. Clearly she did a fantastic job & I couldn't be more pleased with how things turned out. She nailed it. All stakeholders were happy & it was very well received by the audience.

Country Roads Magazine - Culinary Profiles

Country Roads Magazine - Culinary Profiles

Each year Country Roads magazine profiles chefs & restaurants in the region. The idea is to shine a light on new or up & coming operations  & personalities in the culinary world. This typically means that I have the luxury of working with beautiful images of food, chefs & spaces which always makes for an aesthetically appetizing (har har har) layout.

Daryl May Construction leans on me for all of their design eeds including the branding that you'll find on this item, dmayconstruction.com,  as well as many other pieces that are not featured on this site. In this case, the team wanted to showcase their latest development, The Highland District.

The Highland District is a private, 12 lot residential development in the heart of South Baton Rouge. Located on Rodney Drive just off Highland Road, Highland District will reflect homes resembling the 1940’s Greek revival style as well as classical and traditional architecture. Screened porches, brick walks and courtyards, exposed rafters, and wrought iron fencing incased in antique brick will give the residents the feeling of being in a quaint secluded neighborhood. With 100-year- old live oak trees shading the rye grass divided driveways and masonry pillar front porches homeowners can take in the sunset and enjoy a quiet evening away from it all.

I have admired Chase Mullen's artwork since I first came in contact with him in 2016 at a local maker's market. When we started conceptualizing the cover for this issue which included an extensive article on Tarpon fishing, there wasn't a doubt in my mind that Chase was the man for the job. We fleshed out the composition & off he went. Check out more of Chase's artwork here.

July 2017 Cover - Country Roads Magazine

July 2017 Cover - Country Roads Magazine

This was one of the most enjoyable covers to date. One thing for sure is that the Country Roads team loves food. So, naturally we go all out for the cuisine issue. This year, the idea was to convey a regional cuisine theme, with the issue focused around our annual Small Town Chefs Awards Dinner. Each year there are hundreds of Louisiana themed cuisine festivals, posters, book & magazine covers littering the print & digital space. This makes the challenge of doing something original & fresh that much more complex. It's just too easy to slap a bowl of jumbalaya on the cover & call it a day. So I worked with local artist Mary Singleton to develop & execute this conceptual photo shoot. The thought was to center the design around the state flower using a rather unconventional medium. Dough! Once we had a few sketches pinned down we knew that we were on the right track. I was pleased with the end result & so was the audience.
